Second Road Poll

One of my readers expressed some frustration to me about posts linking out The Second Road. I was afraid that might happen, since frankly, I get frustrated myself with similar situations and tend not to read bloggers who publish partial feeds or who link out work on other sites. (If you publish partial feeds and I'm still reading you, I really love you.)

So, here's the deal. I have a commitment to the Second Road to write three posts a week. I have a commitment to myself to write five to six posts a week total. If three of those are at the Second Road, that means I only have time for two to three a week here. I try not to make the Second Road posts anything critical to my train of thought on a subject or a series here. I have been linking to the Second Road posts primarily because I really like having a record of my work for myself all in one place.

The question I have for you all is: would you prefer to keep seeing links to three pieces a week at the Second Road mixed in with the work I'm doing here or would you just like me to go to posting two or three times a week here with no links? I've put a poll up on the right sidebar.

  1. MPJ,

Why not post both and let the reader decide? No one has to go to Second Road if they don't want to.

I have missed a few here and there because I don't want to follow through but sometimes later I come back to it. I guess I would like the option to choose to read the articles you post at the Second Road. I know I'll never go there on my own.

  3. Personally, it makes no difference to me, I'll click and go read it!

  4. Hmm tricky one. I had similar issues when I was writing for Trusera although I didn't have the foresight to ask people their opinion in advance like you!

I'll be interested to know their opinions.

    Cheers

  5. I love your site and prefer to read you here. I sometimes read you on my phone, so it makes it easier if it's all in one spot. I know it's tough to spread yourself thin and alas, it's your site. You do what YOU need, not what I need. I love you no matter.

  6. It's your blog, so I say post a link if you like. However, one solution could be to post the Second Road posts in their entirety here, that way people don't have to go to the enormous effort of clicking a link. That way you fulfill your quota here and on the Second Road.

Sorry--my snarkiness isn't towards you at all. I just feel like you should be able to do whatever the hell you want on your blog. I'm always stoked to read what you write, whether I have to click on a link or not.

  7. I don't understand why one extra click should be an issue! If you don't like it, I guess you just save your finger and don't click! You don't have a button for that on your poll, but I'll go pick the one most pertinent...

  8. These are great comments.

MPJ, do what serves you best. Make yourself happy first.

A few people mentioned cross-posting, both in the comments here and privately in e-mail. I'll have to check the details of my commitment to the Second Road. I know I have done it a few times, but I have tried to change the posts a bit when I did, so that I was still producing (somewhat) fresh content for them.

  10. I say you write your posts on my blog, link them to your blog, and double-link them over to The Second Road.

I didn’t see that as one of the choices, you might want to look into that.

  11. Really. What's the big deal? It's not like anyone has to get in their car and drive over to Second Road to read your posts. It's a click of the mouse at most, two clicks if you don't like where you went. But you might just like it and it might just be something you would not have seen otherwise. Is someone really complaining about having to click a mouse? Geesh!

  12. I agree with Margaux, post both here and there in entirety. I jump over and follow but I'd rather not have to :)

  13. Yeah, it pisses Google off to duplicate post. You do specialize in pissing Google off, though...

And look at Wayward Son being less than beatific! Somehow, that makes me giggle. I love you, Wayward Son.

  14. Every so often I have a student complain about my class. He or she wants more or less of something or other. Almost without fail I make the change, and then that student either ignores the change, doesn't notice, or otherwise makes the change useless.

Point is, don't go through too much trouble for one complaint.

  15. I say post them both here. Why not. You write them both.

  16. I have found and read good quality writing due to following links to TSR. I'd go read you over there even if I *did* have to get in my car 'n driver there. :)

  17. I prefer the posts that are all here, but I still follow you to second road to finish reading. :)

But I don't know where to comment when the post is split like that and so I often skip commenting. :(

  19. I really like your blog and it's one I try to read every day. But I don't have internet at home and my server here at work blocks me from going to Second Road, so when you start a post here and then I have to click over, I get my appetite whetted and then am disappointed. I'd rather not even know you're posting over there - an all or nothing approach is what I'm advocating.
