On the Lighter Side...

Whew! Between the online 12 step work I'm doing, my (slow) progress through my issues around this election and the thought provoking questions you all have given me around one of my recent posts, I'm pretty brain fried. So, I thought it would be fun to (finally) answer two of the more lighthearted questions you all posed for me last month. (See, I don't forget these things, I just work very, very, very slowly!)

1. An anonymous commenter asked: "If you had 2 weeks of free, reliable babysitting and $5,000, where would you go? Who would you go with?"

I would go to a tropical island. I like Hawaii, but it could be anyplace warm and surrounded by water. I want to smell the salt water and fall asleep listening to the ocean waves. I want a room that opens onto the beach and I want never to leave that combination of room and beach for the entire two weeks.

I want to order room service for every single meal, and I want the server to leave the meal outside my door so that I never have to interact with another human during the entire two weeks. Much as I love my husband and would love to get away on a vacation with him for the first time in nearly eight years, I would go alone, alone, alone, ALONE with a stack of books and my journal.

Someplace where no one is pulling on me or making requests of me or needing me (plus ocean and room service) is my idea of paradise!

Now who wants to give me $5000 and a babysitter? I'm ready to go!

2. Mim asked, "Shoes - what's more important, function of fashion and what has been your favourite pair of shoes ever?"

Definitely, without a doubt, function. My feet are wide and super sensitive to temperature and texture. I don't wear socks. I also do not like or wear heels or cute shoes that pinch my toes. When other women squeal and say, "Oh, what a cute pair of shoes." I think (but don't say, because I'm polite and codependent and don't want to offend anyone), "Those look so horribly uncomfortable they make me feel physically ill."

I own just three pairs of shoes (which my friend Tigermom tells me is a crime) and they are all very comfortable, heelless and rubber soled. My favorite shoes ever are my Birkenstock sandals. I even posted a poem about how much I love them.

  1. I soooo love that you own 3 pairs of shoes. I don't understand the obsession AT ALL and people think I'm nuts.

Hawaii is devine. One of my very favorite places to travel!

  2. Definitely works for ME. If I had $5000 … I’d certainly share with you. I do have many more than 3 pairs of shoes … though I’m barefoot most of the time when I’m at home. Strange, eh?
    Hugs and blessings,

  3. New to your blog...I am glad I found it. My youngest son has autism and...I have MS and suffer from depression. Anyway...it is nice to meet you.

  4. Okay, okay, you have outed me and my near addiction/obsession - shoes!

Though my feet also have strong physical needs, I have 8 pair (yikes) of my own tried and true shoes - Dansko clogs.

But, hey, I walk to work so I need to have my feet's needs met.

  5. My sister is threatening to do a shoe intervention on me because I only own three pair myself. We shoeless Janes must stick together and fight for our right to eschew (es-shoe?) excess footwear.

  6. Hah, MPJ. I have 3 pairs, too, and 2 of them are Birks. My feet are also wide and sensitive and literally falling apart, so my shoe options are very limited.

And I'm so ready for that solitary vacation.

  8. Now I'm convinced I have too many shoes, and here I was thinking of myself as a function over fashion person. Clearly I'm no-where near hard core on this subject. I own 22 pairs of shoes, 11 of them are Colorado brand and quite a few of the rest haven't been worn in years. Not sure why I'm keeping them really.

And I don't own any Birks.

My 2 week vacation pick would be a luxury farm-stay bed & breakfast type place - horse riding, spa baths, open fireplaces, home-cooked meals and absolutely NO TV. Maybe a net connection though, 2 weeks is a long time after all ;-) I'd take hubby with me, I'm reasonably fond of his company :)

hehe, 3 pairs.... I have so many, but i have tiny feet. I can go into a store and try the ones on display. But I do love comfort first. and do flip flops count? cause i got me tons of those. Most of my shoes I have had for over 10 years, with new ones sprinkled in...

  13. This made me laugh. I demand cute and comfortable. And I've gotten so much grief about being tall, I like to wear heels just to bother some people--"Do you have to wear those?" Yes, yes, I do.

  14. I have a shoe fetish. I won't even say how many I own. It's disgusting!

  15. I unfortunately have friends who when we go out she will sit there and drool over each pair of shoe. I never understood it. I have 2 pairs of summer shoes (one to wear and one when I have a formal function) and 2 pairs of winter shoes as when one gets wet I need another. Get good quality and you don´t need anything else. Now jackets are another thing!!!!!!!!!
