An article in today's Wall Street Journal on early detection of autism brought to mind the many people who find my blog by googling "early signs of autism." (True, not nearly as many as find me by mistakenly searching for porn but still...) I always picture these searchers as some younger version of myself, anxiously trying to figure out if my son's quirkiness fit into the autism box or whether I could force it not to fit. I've noticed that the information I have on this subject does tend to be buried (as it is even now) beneath my breathtakingly elegant (and sometimes witty) prose. So, I thought I'd try to be a little more succinct in providing resources today:
Lists of general signs and symptoms
I have to admit, I found information like this too vague to be helpful, which is probably why people wind up at my blog, presumably looking for more than an overview. If so, read on...
This is the type of concrete information I was always looking for (but didn't find) during my son's toddler days.
- Wall Street Journal article on tracking eye movements
- Science Daily on how children look at faces and its correlation to the severity of autism
- Dr. Greene on lack of gesturing in children around age 1
- Dr. Greene on head/body alignment
Well, you know this is why you're really all are here, right? Me, me, me! And my breathtakingly elegant (and sometimes witty) prose.
