You Do the Math Haikus

Haiku Friday1 in 150
One in one fifty:
Number of kids diagnosed
with an A.S.D.*

#?
Unknown numbers say:
Thimerosal's mercury
causes autism.

35,000
Thirty five thousand:
Deaths prevented in U.S.
by vaccines each year.

250,000!

From measles alone,
two hundred fifty thousand:
Deaths each year worldwide.

.01%
Point oh one percent:
Percentage thimerosal
found in flu vaccines.

49%
Forty nine percent:
Germicide thimerosal's
mercury content.

0
Zero (yes, zero):
Thimerosal/mercury
now in kids' vaccines.

0
Zero mercury
in hepatitis, measles,
polio vaccines.

25
There are twenty five
micrograms of mercury
in flu vaccine shots.

33
You eat thirty three
micrograms mercury in
two ounces tuna.

23
Twenty three studies:
Show no connection between
vaccines/autism.

82,000
Eighty two thousand:
Chemicals now registered
with the E.P.A.

25,000
Twenty five thousand:
Approximate number of
genes in a human.

Odds one chemical
in just one or two vaccines
causes autism?

Chances it makes sense
not to vaccinate children?
Well, you do the math.

*Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Note: I decided to add a few haikus and write a follow up post, because I felt the haikus as they originally stood were too vague, and I wanted to make it clear that it's my personal belief that vaccines do save lives and did not cause my son's autism.

  1. I stopped vaccinating mine until they hit kindergarten. They still don't get the flu shot.

  2. Mine is 18 now. One and only. He was vaccinated all thru high school. Wish I would've known all this back then.

    Mary,

you have no idea how much I appreciate this haiku! I work in healthcare and my wife is a school teacher that is very concerned about autism. I also live in an area full of opposition to vaccinations. We have many many many conversations with friends about vaccinations and autism.

Could I have permission to reproduce your haiku to share with others? It's very creative and thought provoking without being over the top. Thank you for sharing!

Ken, yes, you have my permission, as long as you attribute it to me and include my URL -- you can use mamampj.blogspot.com or ARoomOfMamasOwn.com (that one is probably easier to remember).
