Clearing out the Belly Lint

I generally stay away from posting about news, for several reasons:

  1. This blog was designed for the purposes of gazing at my own lovely and fascinating navel. Why venture outside the bounds of my beautiful belly lint, unless news stories reflect on said belly lint?
  2. There are two sides to every story, and I hesitate to chime in on matters I know only snippets of from news stories. (Unless they involve diagnosing celebrities I know next to nothing about with addictions or a history of abuse. That, my friends, is easy, and I do jump all over it.)
  3. There are tons of bloggers out there who do a great job already of dissecting and parsing the news.
  4. I ruminate like a big cow, chewing and chewing on ideas. By the time my mind is ready to spit out its nuggets of wisdom for you, the story is dead and gone. (See: Eliot Spitzer.)
But I've decided to blog about this story anyway. Just let me suck on this cud of mine for a few more hours. Ok?

  1. I can't remember ever saying this about a teacher--I am a teacher after all--but she ought to be fired.

    Or horse whipped.

Maybe the students could get together and vote her out of her job.

Maybe she'd be okay if her family voted her out of the house.

Maybe we should structure all of society this way--voted out of school, voted out of work, voted out of the family, voted out of life. It would certainly be easier than having to live together.

Well, I'm sure you'll have thought this better than me--have at it. I look forward to reading it.

  2. So, my son should start watching Survivor now to get a head start on alliances? No, probably not, he's the "full-on autism" type so he doesn't really get that socializing thing.

Seriously, this isn't emotional abuse? If I was that mom, I might have to go down there and kick the teacher's ass. I can't imagine why this teacher thought that was a good idea!

  3. This is so unbelievably mean and ignorant. She should not be allowed to have responsibility of vulnerable kids. I cannot believe that the authorities have accepted this!

  7. You may be ruminating and thinking about what you are going to say, I'm sitting here with my mouth open.

I think that teacher has spent way too much time watching "reality" (ahem, sorry I choke on that) tv, and has lost touch with reality!

Can't wait to read what you have to say about this after you have 'chewed' on it awhile. Of course it had to be in Florida right? This is why I am home educating in this fine state.

That is just awful. Not only is it damaging for the little boy, but that teacher had no business endowing those other children with the "power" to oust a classmate they simply didn't understand.

The teacher should be strung up and picked apart and shamed for her flaws. Disgusting.

  10. Hell hath no fury like a Kindergarten class.

Good lawd have mercy. What the hell what was she thinking?!?!!!!!!!!

I don't know where to end with my outrage.

  11. I'm absolutely stunned.

This poor child must have been having just an awful experience in school.

And how terrible for the other children to have been encouraged in such shitty behavior. Haven't we learned ANYTHING from the brown eyes, blue eyes classroom?

Surely there is an age appropriate book for teachers and parents to use -- and why the hell are we so enamored of vote 'em off the island shows? Why not shows like This is Me Now (you can download an episode for free from iTunes)

  12. As an elementary principal, I would have to say that I would start proceedings to have this teacher terminated....beginning with placing her/him on leave and away from anymore children she/he could emotionally hurt.

What kind of school district would stand behind this nonsense? I am CERTAIN that the other Kinder students did NOT know what they were really voting for or what was REALLY going on.

Special needs or not, this is discrimination at its finest. I'd be ashamed to work at a school like this.

  13. This is one of those times when I really have to restrain myself from sending vicious e-mail to the teacher in the story. It's always possible that she has a side that has been misrepresented by the press and/or the parents.

Nevertheless, if there's any truth in this story, this woman should never be allowed to be in charge of young children again.
