Six Sensory Issues of Mine

I was thinking I need a week of blogging to catch up on blogging, but think I need another week of blogging just to catch up on memes, awards and other various and sundry things that have been piling up during my recent spate of viruses (and prior to that, my perpetual spate of disorganizedness). Let this be a start: Jay has tagged me in a "six quirks about me" meme. And since my quirks are mainly sensory integration issues, I've decided this is "Six Sensory Issues of Mine!"

1) Link to the person that tagged you.
2) Post the rules on your blog.
3) Share six non-important things/habits/quirks about yourself.
4) Tag at least three people at the end of your post and link to their blogs.
5) Let each person know they have been tagged by leaving a comment on their blog.
6) Let the fun begin!
  1. I eat the same thing for breakfast every day and have for years: one slice of whole wheat toast with Nutella and a glass of ice water. Sometimes I go through periods where I add a banana, sometimes I swap the water for milk, but the toast and Nutella are musts. In general, if I can't eat that, I end up feeling empty and unsatisfied all day, even if I eat something else, which I generally don't do unless I'm traveling. And things like this are why I don't like to travel.

  2. I go on "food jags," meaning I eat the same thing day after day at a given meal for months. (I learned this term through dealing with my son's eating issues, and it is one of the reasons I didn't realize that some of his eating habits were as far outside the norm as they are.) My current jag is cheese sandwiches for lunch. My husband finds this incredibly dull. I find it comforting.

  3. I run hot. I own one jacket, which I wear in all weather and I perpetually appear to be underdressed in the winter. My husband runs cold and owns what seems like at least 10,000 jackets, coats, sweatshirts, parkas, raincoats, etc. for every subtle variation in temperature Nature possesses. I can't understand why he needs so many, and keeping track of them drives me crazy. But I do like acting as his human electric blanket.

  4. I don't wear socks. It pains me to put socks on my kids, because I remember how miserable those seams made me as a child and how I used to fuss with them to get them just right over my toes: crooked socks with seams that poked my toes were the bane of my existence. Oddly, my kids don't seem to mind socks. I also can't sleep if my feet are under the covers. I knew I loved my husband when I fell asleep on his couch one night while we were dating, and he covered me up, all except my feet.

  5. Fluorescent lighting makes me dizzy. I find it helps to wear sunglasses in places like Target, even if it looks really weird.

  6. I'm very picky about fabric textures. I can't wear wool or polyester, because they're too rough. I prefer nice soft cotton, rayon or (mmm, decadent killing of millions of worms) silk.
I tag... Damn it, I'm too tired to tag anyone. I'm going to sleep on my high thread count sheets, in my decidedly non-vegan silk pajamas with my feet out of the covers.

  4. Oh how I relate.
Both me and my son have some sensory integration issues and it can surprise peolple how real they are, that others experience things differently and for some of us it is like having the tv blaring, rain coming through the roof and wearing sandpaper sweaters.

  5. Let me take a wild guess here. The foods you mentioned are supposed to be combined. I'll bet a nickle your son and yourself don't like foods to touch on your plate. Do I win a nickle?

  6. My takeaway from this meme, as I see what I have in common with Mama and Jay and my friends Ergo and C-Belle, and now with you (that would be all six things) is that no one is very quirky. Either that or people with sensory integration issues like to blog.

  7. These are each intriguing "quirks" and have me wondering what quirky things I might do ... but nothing comes to mind at the moment. I have no idea what Nutella is and because you enjoy it so much, I wonder what I'm missing. I like oatmeal with banana and/or blueberries for breakfast. I've never liked to wear socks ... in fact whenever possible my feet are bare or in sandals. If it's cold they're in UGG boots.
    Hugs and blessings,

postpaleo, I think you win half a nickel. My son definitely can't have more than one food on the plate at a time -- forget about touching.

I used to have to keep the foods from touching. I also used to eat the items on my plate in order of preference (favorite last) and eat each item completely before moving to the next. I couldn't take a bite of one, move to another and then move back.

But for some reason I don't do this any more. Weird. I'm not sure when or why it changed, come to think of it...

  10. Fun post, MPJ! Nutella looks so nice and creamy -- but I've never tried it on toast. As for Postpaleo's comment -- I am very much a one food at a time eater. I don't mind if the foods touch, but I HATE runny foods that run into other things. Yuck.

I used to hate socks too, and generally run hot, but after moving to this place, where when I took the dog out for a walk this morning it was -28 degrees F, I've learned to like them a lot. My feet are a big indicator of the rest of my body -- if they are hot, cold or uncomfortable -- so goes the rest of me.

If we could put together our hubby's coats and jackets, I assure you we could open a big, big store!

  12. If you haven't read the Four Agreements yet you should ... interesting section in the back about forgetting what we know and trying to start fresh. Made me think about my quirks, and the things I might be transmitting via Momdom to my girls.
